An experimental investigation was carried out on the swirling flow-induced pressure pulsations in a pipe, connected to a swirl generator with inlet guide vanes. The pressure fluctuations with discrete frequencies are generated in the swirler exit pipe. Their frequencies are expressed by two groups of Strouhal number. One is 0.9-1.0 and the other 0.5-0.6. When the frequencies coincide with the acoustic natural frequencies of the pipe, resonant pressure pulsations could be generated. Though, in this experiment, resonances due to the higher Strouhal number were not detected, severe resonances of the first three natural modes due to the lower Strouhal number are observed. It is concluded from these facts that the swirling flow-induced pressure pulsations in a pipe are considered to be resonant phenomena caused by the Strouhal-type excitation.
