The vibration characteristics of an oscillating linear cascade with tip clearance were studied experimentally as well as theoretically. To obtain the unsteady aerodynamic forces, the surface pressures were measured on several blades in both chordwise and spanwise directions, and the method of influence coefficients were adopted. Results showed that the tip clearance had a strong influence on the distribution of unsteady aerodynamic forces along the blade span. When the tip clearance existed, aerodynamic damping forces decreased considerably over a large portion of the blade span. When the steady aerodynamic loading acted on blades, the influence of the tip clearance was suppressed. The tip vortex increased the unsteady aerodynamic force in the region near the blade tip. The unsteady aerodynamic forces were evaluated numerically by use of a vortex lattice method. Calculated damping forces showed good agreement with experimental data. It was revealed that the cascade flutter was suppressed by the presence of tip clearances.
