Subsonic and transonic multi-stage axial flow compressors have been designed and tested. The overall performance including the partial load operation, showed a satisfactory agreement with the prediction based on the quasi three dimensional flow analysis (Q-3D). Closer observation on the characteristic of the stages indicated that the experimental results agreed fairly well with the Q-3D in the medium and high pressure stages, however some discrepancies were observed in the transonic stage. Therefore, a detailed measurement and three dimensional viscous flow analysis (NS analysis) were conducted on the inlet guide vane and 1st stage blade. As a result, the Q-3D is not necessarily sufficient for estimating the flow angle and pressure rise in the transonic stage. On the other hand, the NS analysis gives more accurate prediction and better comprehension of the flow phenomena.
