A new type of inlet guide-vane to operate at quite high axial inlet Mach number and to have quite large degree of prerotation with strong twist vane profile in spanwise is described. The variable-geometry rotating guide-vane is formed by two components, the fixed element in front and the rotating element in the rear. The camber line and thickness distribution of the guide-vane profile are determined using optimization of the velocity distributions on profile surfaces calculated by quasi-three dimensional design method. Experimental results of the compressor equipped with the inlet guide-vane indicate that the extent of the useful operating range at compressor part-speeds is improved obviously and the design method for the guide-vane is successful.
