A scale model of an axial flow fan was tested in a dual-throttle test facility. Data is presented which illustrates the effect of bypass ratio and flow splitter position (distance between splitter tip and last blade row), on the stability limit of the fan. Reduction in bypass ratio and increasing the distance between the EGV and flow splitter led to modest increased fan pressure rises. The experimentally obtained steady-state pressure and temperature rise characteristics were used to test the capability of a model which was developed by modelling the flow on the basis of unsteady mass and momentum conservation laws. The mathematical models predicted the point of dynamic flow instability quite closely to the experimentally observed mass flow and pressure rise values.
