Measurements were made at the exit of a backward curved centrifugal impeller to obtain velocity distribution from blade to blade at various axial positions for vaneless and vane-Island diffuser at off-design conditions using a constant temperature hot wire anemometer and computer controlled period-sampling system. The measurements showed that the flow was strongly distorted at the exit of a backward curved impeller coupled with vaneless diffuser at off-design condition. The peak of radial velocity was near the pressure surface of impeller blade and there was a decrease from the hub to the shroud. When the flow rate was reduced the main flow region tend toward the shroud side. The measured velocity distribution at the exit of impeller for vane-Island diffuser showed that the velocity fluctuations were increased apparently owing to the presence of diffuser vanes in comparison with that at the exit of impeller with vaneless diffuser and the frequency of velocity flutuation near the diffuser vanes changed by a considerable amount.
