The Senri Energy Center of Osaka Gas Co., located in Senri District, Osaka, is the Japanese first district heating and cooling plant which began operation in 1970. During the ensuing years, the supply of the cooling and heating energy had increased steadily and it was anticipated that further energy demand would come out from various reasons such as the opening of a local mono-rail station expected in the near future. In order to meet such increasing heat energy demand, an expansion program was started in 1983. The program was studied from various aspects such as energy conservation, minimum running cost, ease of operation,, application of the up-to date technology and an affinity with the future model district heating and cooling system. As the result, the combined system of a gas turbine cogeneration system and a motor-driven turbo-refrigerator was selected. The expansion program was completed in June, 1986. This paper describes the 3MW gas turbine cogeneration system built under the above program for applying to the district heating and cooling of the Senri Central Area with its operating result.
