The contribution of secondary air to the primary combustion of a gas turbine-type continuous combustion chamber is discussed on the basis of detailed experimental data. A straight flow can-type combustion chamber with gaseous fuel was used and systematic measurements were carried out on secondary air flow, composition, temperature and electric properties of the combustion gas over a wide range of experimental parameters, that is, flow rate, swirl strength, air-fuel ratio and air flow distribution. When one third of combustion air for primary combustion is introduced from secondary air holes prepared at an suitable position of the flame tube, it promotes the reaction in the primary combustion region without any damage of flame stability and decreases incompletely reacted ingredients in the downstream combustion gas so effectively that the combustion efficiency goes up. The contribution of secondary air to the primary combustion has closed relations with flow rate, swirl strength and air-fuel ratio.
