The partial fulfillments of combustion research with laser-based probing techniques and numerical prediction method, which have been conducted in this laboratory up to now, are summarized with new findings added. The LDV application to the strongly swirling jet flames revealed that the swirl components at the mean and fluctuating velocity played a key role in turbulent/combustion interaction (1). A comparison of numerical solutions and the LDV data showed that the mean flow variables were mostly influenced by changes of the turbulent viscosity given at inlet, in the reacting turbulent flow around a 2-D bluff body (2). A CARS/LDV probe was developed to make the simultaneous measurement of temperature and velocity (3). These itemized descriptions have close connections with each other towards the final goal of our on-going research project. Future work and plans are also described.
