The behavior of hydrogen jet diffusion flames developing in a swirling air stream has been studied by varying the following three parameters ; the air stream velocity and the swirl intensities of air stream and hydrogen jet. It was found that the stability of the rim-stabilized hydrogen flames was hardly sensitive to the air stream velocity and the swirl intensity of hydrogen jet, but was sensitive to the swirl intensity of air stream. In particular as it exceeded a critical value, the hydrogen flames became remarkably stable and finally the flames did not lift up to the sonic injection velocity of hydrogen because of the formation of a reverse flow zone in the swirling air stream. The stability of the lifted flames was affected by those three parameters. The temperature profile within the flame and the flame length were found to be affected mainly by the swirl intensity of air stream.
