Carefully designed rotating regenerators have a high effectiveness. Therefore they are suitable for use in small regenerative gas turbines with good fuel economy inspite of their leakage. A calculation procedure with the possibility of taking up to three independent local variables and time into account is necessary to answer all questions of design and running rotating regenerators. The programme presented solves the equations of heat transfer between core and fluid and due to rotation consecutively. Heat conduction and transport losses are introduced, too. Different questions of design and running a rotating regenerator are regarded with this calculation procedure: the optimization of regenerator speed, the influence of non-uniformities in fluid velocity, tolerances in core production and core temperature distribution during the cold start of a gas turbine engine.
