• Chaetochromin A (1) is a mycotoxin, first isolated from Chaetomium thielavioideum and exhibits toxicity and antitumor activities. To confirm the structure-activity relationship, further surveys on bis(naphtho-γ-pyrone) mold metabolites were conducted. Three congeners named chaetochromins B (2), C (3), and D (4) were isolated from c. gracile and the structures were elucidated chiefly by the NMR data. Seven new bis(naphtho-γ-pyrone)derivatives, ustilaginoidins D (8), E (9), F (10), G (11), H (12), I (13), and J (14), were isolated from Claviceps virens and the structures were determined in the same manner. The absolute configuration of chaetochromin A (1) was established by the X-ray analysis of the pentamethyl ether p-bromobenzoate (15). The exciton chirality method was applied to these compounds and the atropisomerism of bis(naphtho-γ-pyrone) derivatives was discussed based on the CD data. The structure-activity relationship observed in the cytotoxicity to KB cells of these compounds was mentioned. The biosynthesis of chaetochromin A (1) was also studied by ^<13>C-NMR.
