Various regions of friction stir welded (FSWed) joints were studied in detail to better understand structural response of a ZK60 magnesium alloy subjected to Friction Stir Welding (FSW). Particular emphasis has been paid to examination of grain size and morphology, texture, misorientation distribution as well as precipitation phenomena. Microstructural evolution is shown to be a very complex process governed by geometric effects of strain, twinning, grains splitting, as well as simultaneous development of both dynamic discontinuous and dynamic continuous recrystallisation. Precipitation behavior was found to be a combination of dissolution and reprecipitation of secondary particles cased by thermal cycle during weld.
