Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a chronic autoimmune blistering disease that primarily affects the mucosa and conjunctiva and heals with scar formation. Immunohistological findings demonstrate autoantibodies on the anti-epidermal basement lamina. Laminin 5 MMP, a type of MMP, is a subepidermal blistering disease. The target antigen is laminin 5 (epiligrin), a specific extracellular matrix protein that binds to the lamina lucida of the epidermal basement lamina. Oral predonisolone (PSL) was administered to a 47-year-old male with laminin 5 MMP. Skin blisters improved slightly, but the oral lesions and ophthalmic signs, including congestion and adhesions on both palpebral conjunctivae demonstrated no response to PSL treatment. However, significant improvement was observed following plasmapheresis in combination with oral steroid treatment.
