The objective conception of cognition as a mediator between stimuli and responses sharply contrasts with the naive, intuitive understanding that to cognize the world is to know the meaning of it to decide what to do about it. This discrepancy has been considered almost unconquerable by those who wish to study the cognitive function in objective terms. The author believes that the objective conception and intuitive understanding can be put into one unified form by considering the function of cognition as a kind of efficient information-processing. In this article, some of the simple human cognitive functions-identification, discrimination, and immediate memory --- were analyzed in terms of efficient information processing; and through the examination of experimental results and daily experiences a hypothesis was advanced that the human cognitive process is mediated by a multichannel system which processes information by efficient coding.
