It is no easy thing to explain Lu Hsun's works, mainly because, in my opinion, he was in close contact with the complicated world in which he was living, and this social background is still left not fully explained, and secondly because his complete biography is still unobtainable. Recently the significance and the value of the study of Lu Hsun have been increasing, and books and articles on Lu Hsun that have been published are not few. I have read them through and found out that one point of view is wanting. That is, there seems to be, in them, a danger of estimating him with some fixed, preoccupied ideas already taken in the case of other writers, because they want the consideration, so to speak, of the growth and dovelopment of Lu Hsun as a Man. If there is such danger, it should be avoided from the two points of view mentioned above. Consequently some biographical researches of the spiritual development of Lu Hsun must be one of the indispensable studies. I have collected, as far as I can, works and articles on him published in China by his friends and relatives after World War II. I have compared with these materials and examined his own works, and given special consideration to his student days in Japan. I have tried to give some supplement to his biography and elucidate where his youthful spirit lies.
