In 1937, on the occasion of the third centenary of the "Discours de la methode", the study in Cartesian philosophy had entered into a quite new state. Contradictions included in Cartesian thought, since then, demand anew their solution to us. Because of the actuality of Cartesian problems, we cannot answer to them without indicationg in any way our own standpoint. The opposite directions in the interpretation of Castesianism, correspond exactly to the various inclinations in modern thought. New explication in vogue especially emphasises the irrationalistic side of this philosophy. The more necessary to irrationalalize the liberty itself, the more to show Cartesianism as irrationalistic. Because it was the first which constated the privilege of "liberte de l'homme," even though "de l'homme en tant qu' individual." The liberty in Cartesianism, as in Bergsonism, seems to be regarded by many historians simply at its exclusive opposition to the mechanistic necessity. ...
