From the outset of his literary activities, Pushkin had a real interest in some of the ancient Greek and Roman poets, and read them with a deep and sympathetic understanding. True, he read them mostly in translations, especially in the case of Greek poets, but, nevertheless, he could grasp their respective characteristics admiraby well by the infallible instinct of a poet. At the same time, it should be emphasized that Pushlin's admiration for the ancient world was less of esthetic than moral nature, as is shown by his approach to Cleopatra, the central figure of his novel "Egyptian Nights". The present essay is an attempt to examine the scope and nature of Pushkin's appreciation of the classics, based on the analysis of his translations of Greek and Latin authors, as well as of various allusions to them, scattered through his works and letters.
