In spite of the notion generally conceived, the "Genji-monogatari" is not written on the plot previously planned, but it has got its present style from the facts that the story suffered changes in its nature and that its polt also unrolled as writing proceeded. Here in this report I wanted especially to prove that there was Ur "genji-monogarari" as a romance that originated in the so-called swan-maid legend, and that the rest part which developed as a realistic novel was added to it afterwards. The former twenty volumes of all fifty-four of the "Genji-monogatari," with which I dealt here in an attempt to prove it, are the important ones to be carefully examined morphologically; for they themselves are the models that unfold how romances developed into novels; in the examination of the causes of such development we may expect much which will be of contribution to the historical research into literature. I restricted, however, my research here only to the question of morphology.
