Shinto-shrines in Japan under the care of national Government described in the Engi Shiki numbered 3,133. The clear account that I could get was that a great number of incarnete deities are worshipped at these shrine. Concerning the geographical distribution of these shrines, it must be stated that they spread most throughout Kinai(Western Provinces), and decrease in number in country parts remote from Kyoto. As regards this tendency, as far as we can get from the Fudoki and the Rikkokushi, it should be pointed out that going out of the simple and original ways of nature worship the Japanese has come to venerate the Incarnate-Gods. (Anthropomorphism). As far as the geographical side is concerned, apart from the side of times, the Incarnate-Gods have found most favour in the civilized regions. As far as the side of times are concerned, apart from the geographical side, the gods have been incarnated with the change of times. The number of Incarnate-Gods who possess different names and functions is so great. In spite of this polytheism, however, those Incarnate-Gods have kept up some unity. We can find in this unity the strength of unified ancient country expressed in the form of deity faith.
