The purpose of the present study consists in tracing the genesis as well as development of anchoretism in ancient China. When we analyse the stories told in Lun-Yu(論語) and Chuang Tsu's 1st Volume(荘子内編) about the hermits. we find there that these hermits were men of intelligence, and conceived pessimistic ideas caused by the loss and deprivation of their social position. Investigating the form and substance of these stories, from view-point social history, we infer that Chuang Tsu's 1st Volume was written by a historical person Chuaug Chou (荘周), who was mutilated of his feet, and we discover in those stories told in Lun-Yu(論語) a reflection of pessimistic ideas, entertained by those "隠者" or "佚民" (devoid or deprived of their citizenship in ancient city-state), especially prevalent from 6th century to 4th century B.C. Originating in this pessimism, the later anchoretism as ideology was in the 3rd. cent. B.C. developed into a particular way of living by water-side or in the wood.
