This paper describes newly developed techniques for measuring actual ballast stones' three-dimensional (3D) motion. Three-dimensional motion is measured using a special ballast stone in which piezoresistive triaxial accelerating sensors were introduced. The sensor can simultaneously detect acceleration in three axial directions using a single chip. Two accelerometer chips, which constitute a complementary pair, are embedded separately in mutually parallel and symmetrical positions with a certain inclination, in the core part of a crushed stone. The average value of the two acceleration measurement values indicates the translational acceleration of a center of gravity, and the difference of the two acceleration measurement values yields the rotational acceleration. A full-scale field experiment for measurement on a revenue service railway line was performed to evaluate the applicability of the stone sensor. Results confirmed that the newly developed techniques are beneficial for measuring the 3D ballast motion imparted by moving trains.
