Equilibrium states of a rotating circular membrane subjected to transverse distributed loads are investigated. In order to analyze large transverse deformation, the membrane theory of shells of revolution is applied to formulate basic equilibrium equations. Numerical integration method of the equations are presented taking account of buckling due to large transverse deformation. The present method yields approximate displacements, stresses and strains in equilibrium states although buckling waves cannot be obtained. An experiment is also performed to measure transverse displacements of a rotating circular membrane under gravity in vacuum. Fairly good agreement is found between the displacements given by the analysis and experiment. It is shown that the present method can yield approximate stress distributions of buckled membrane. The comparison of the analysis and von Karman theory is also discussed.
