Ultrasound is used to detect flaws on the race of rolling element bearings. The ultrasound probe is attached to the outer ring of a bearing with an acrylic attachment. Transient variation in the strength of the reflection wave from the outer-ring race is recorded and then processed by FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). The FFT result of a normal bearing shows peaks only at the frequency of passage of for rolling elements on the outer-ring race, Zfc. While, the results of a bearing with an imitation flaw on the inner-ring race shows peaks not only at Zfc but also at the frequency of passage of rolling elements on the inner-ring race, Zfi. When the imitation flaw is about 4 micrometers in depth, and when its length is 10 percent of the circumference of the inner-ring race, the ratio of the height of the peaks of Zfi and Zfc is more than one quarter. Thus, we can detect the flaw on the inner-ring race by comparing the height of peaks of Zfi and Zfc.
