In this contribution, future prospect on the CIS-based thin-film solar cells and PV modules is reported based on the present status. After long struggle in the R&D, CIS-based thin-film PV technology has just come to the starting line of the commercialization in the annual production volume of 10 to 30 MW/a. To expand their production volume up to the comparable capacity of at least 200 to 300 MW/a to the crystalline-Si PV technology, improvement in the efficiency of 13 to 15 % on large-area PV modules, development of robust production technology applicable to the mass production, development of low-cost, easy-recycle, but durable packaging technology and development of suitable recycle technology on the waste management are all remaining subjects and must be dissolved at the current pilot-production stage.
