One of the important factors in building scheduling models is how well they can manage uncertainties in the dynamic manufacturing environment. Reactive scheduling, which is recognized as a practical approach to solve this problem, aims to cope with unexpected events by promptly revising or regenerating the existing schedule. However, the previous works on reactive scheduling had addressed neither its generic model nor framework. This paper proposes a formal model for reactive scheduling problems to build the problem-solving framework of the reactive approach. We first define the problem of reactive scheduling which consists of two sub problems-a schedule generation problem and a when-to-schedule problem, on the basis of a snapshot. Secondly, by using these problems, we provide a kind of taxonomy which is capable of classification of the previous reactive scheduling techniques based on the proposed framework. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model by some examples of classification and computational experiments.
