• The Author observed, in application of Heilmeyer's modified process using the dye congo-red, the results given below when estimated in 31 typhoid and paratyphoid cases of the blood volume in comparison to that in healthy body, viz : (1) Total blood volume was found increasing in amount throughout the entire course of typhoid and paratyphoid fever, to record, on an average, 102.7cc in the acniastic period, 109.9cc in the decrement stage and 97.3cc during the convalescent stage per kilogram body-weight, while the plasma volume within it is found circulating 55.4cc, 64.3cc. and 57.2cc respectively, to remind of A distinct increase throughout the course, and the volume of the blood-cells contained therein shows a variation of 47.3cc., 45.6cc. and 40.1cc. in surplus. Remarkable increase in the total blood volume in typhoid and paratyphoid cases is thus considered to due chiefly to the plasma volume in excess. (2) Haematocrit in measurement of the red blood-corpuscles was resulting, on an average, in 45.7% during the increment stage, 41.6% in the decrement stage and 41.2% in the convalescent stage, reminding of a fall during the course the fever declines. (3) The circulation time estimated on its course between elbow and ear-lap, was found on an average 12.0 seconds of time during the increment stage, 12.9" in the decrement stage and 11.6" in the convalescent stage, denoting that it is not much differing from the regular velocity in a healthy body, excepting in a few cases where the increment end decrement stages have shown somewhat dull in motion. (4) The blood pressure, systolic and diastolic, was found, on an average, 98.7-54.5mm Hg. during the increment stage, 99.8-54.9mm Hg. in the decrement stage and 104.6-58.1mm Hg. in the convalescent stage, reminding a fall in general, especially during the days acmastic fever continues.
