This report deals with procedures for editing cumulative indexes of scientific periodicals(mainly written in English) with the aid of digital computers. Index entries are subject and author. As data sources we have utilized the table of contents, annual indexes and abstracts of the corresponding periodicals. The output of this system is printouts of an automatic phototype setter. To obtain the output there are two intermediate procedures, subject and author index preparing. For preparing subject index so many man-hours are required that a computer makes such tabulations as an alphabetical subject headings or a permuted term list with occurence frequency, to shorten manual procedures. Examples of editing the index are illustrated by cases of the journals of Air pollution control Association, and of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
