The present research aims at describing the present situation of teacher training in the field of special education in a southern state of India, namely Kerala. Relevant information was collected from related agencies and personal through two field surveys conducted in 2000 and 2001. In addition some renewed information was collected from the website of related agencies. It was found that (1) NGOs recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India played an crucial role in teacher training, and (2) teacher training was conducted mainly inside the special schools or institutes as on-the-job training. Future research is needed to investigate the situation of short-term teacher training conducted by the state government.
