Transparent objects are difficult to measure with conventional stereo methods because of their transmissive properties and their specular surfaces. We propose an active stereo method for measuring transparent objects using specular reflections on the surfaces. Our method uses a slit-pattern from an LCD display. The position of a surface can be estimated as the intersection of the incident light and the reflected light on the surface. However, the direction of the incident light cannot be determined because the diffusing light irradiates to any directions. To identify the direction of incident light, the method uses two position of the slit-line sources which makes the reflection on the same position of the target surface. We constructed a prototype of measurement system, and the experimental results shows that the method can measure the outer surfaces of an acrylic squared prism and an acrylic cylinder.
