The first version of the Proactive Personality Scale with the data collected from Japanese college women (JPPS-15) was developed by Nishiyama and Takahashi in 2003. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the PPS which is applicable to Japanese adolescent both male and female. Principal factor analysis was conducted on the 17 items from Bateman and Crant's (1993) PPS, and a one-factor structure with high factor loadings was found among the 15 items. Each principal factor analysis with the data from both male and female Japanese adolescent shows the same result. This PPS, therefore, was found to have strong internal consistency and split-half reliability, and demonstrated concurrent validity in correlations to the 'BigFive' personality domains. Finally the PPS-15 for Japanese adolescent (JPPS-15 A) consisting of one-factor structure and 15 items was constructed. Proactive personality was positively correlated with self-esteem but negatively with impulsivity. This relationship, however, shows only a partial result, so further research will be needed. It is presumed that the proactive personality is relatively influenced by the developmental stage. The necessity to take this factor into consideration in the future research was suggested from the results gained from this study.
