A career as a self-employed has recently attracted much attention from the individual of almost all ages, and the government as well. This paper analyzes the important factors which may influence the career selection and continuation as self-employed by using the available micro data. Since the data for career selection is the binary selection type, appropriate statistical methods, such as the logit model and the probit model, have been utilized for the analysis. Estimation results show that the influence of the assets including the household income and house on the career selection as a self-employed has been diminishing. Although the aging shows a positive effects, locality measured by the distance from the Tokyo station and the accumulation of education imply the negative influence, which may reflect the severe economic situation in the rural areas and among the rather young people who have lower educational attainment.
