The purpose of this paper is to investigate the DAIHATSU-FSOッase with information from several sourses and within the framework of Foreign Direct Investment, from the Japanese point of view. The term here DAIHATSU-FSOッase means that the planned project for medium sized automobile production between FSO (Fabryka Samochodow Osobowych) in Poland and a foreign automobile company. Japanese DAIHATSU and other Japanese companies and Italian FIAT had keen competition to have a contract for the project with Polish FSO. The negotiations took around five years. The main points for the negotiations among them were about the credit policy and the technology transfer policy toward Poland. Although, until the spring of 1988, it was said that DAIHATSU offered a better credit policy and a superior technology transfer policy to FIAT, DAIHATSU finally failed to get the contract. This paper mainly focuses on reasons why DAIHATSU failed against FIAT. From the framework of the theory and empirical research of Foreign Direct Investment, we can basically interpret the result of the case concerned here, on the one hand, with the difference of accumulated managerial resources between Japanese companies and Italian FIAT particularly in the field of investing directly to East European countries, and, on the other hand, with the difference of attitudes and policies toward East European countries between the Japanese government and the Italian government. With such an interpretation, the result of this case could be evaluated, in this paper, as just a normal case.
