This investigation is designed to identify some differences in Japanese and American students' views of classroom behaviors. For this purpose, a small research project was conducted with 63 Japanese college students at a university in Japan and 19 college students at a university in the United States. The subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire about their perception of appropriate classroom behavior. The results show that there is a wide gap between Japanese students and American students in their views of appropriate classroom participation strategies. Provided are some strategies for addressing and resolving the problems that this gap may cause in EFL classrooms.
