It has been four years since Kushiro National College of Technology made it one of its mid-term educational goals for the college students to attain a pre-second grade qualification in the Eiken Test. About 40% of the second graders who are obligated to sit for the test have succeeded in passing it. Currently, some 50% of the all final year students graduate with the qualification of the pre-second or the second grade. However, the data from the last three years, starting in 2004 by the Eiken Association, shows that there has been one certain common weak point among the Kushiro Kosen students across those years. Basically, it is word-assembling composition. In this paper, I would like to identify in detail, based on the Eiken data, this weak area of the Kosen students in the test, and suggest four approaches on how to overcome it so that they could work on the test more effectively and efficiently.
