Many linguists, in their discussions on Cantonese Tone Sandhi, are in the opinion that the high rising changed tone usually occurs in the last character (i.e. syllable) in polysyllabic nouns. This paper attempts to examine this common theory by studying a list of polysyllabic nouns containing monosyllabic food nouns that are usually pronounced in the high rising changed tone in colloquial speech. In comparing and analyzing the positions of each monosyllabic noun character in the different words compiled and their Tone Sandhi behaviour, we can come to the following conclusion. The tonal change tendency of the monosyllabic noun itself and the significance of its original meaning and form within the polysyllabic word can be considered as two other crucial factors in determining the occurrence of the high rising changed tone.
