This study explores (a) the components of spiritual pain through quantitative research, (b) the differences in spiritual pain scores according to one's experience, attributes or background in the same population, and (c) the influence of spiritual pain on the quality of life and life satisfaction. The Spiritual Pain Scale (SPS) was created through a review of related research. SPS consists of 40 items in 6 factors, and the last questions are about one's quality of life and life satisfaction. The data samples included 411 students who attend university or junior college in the Kansai area. The exploratory factor analysis yielded 4 factors: (1) distrust in self, (2) disintegration of one's own value system, (3) absence of a being that accepts or loves one unconditionally, (4) distress or loneliness related to death. Each factor is discussed, and explained by its relationship dimension. As a result of multiple regression analysis among factors of spiritual pain, the disintegration of the value system was shown to have the most influence on the students' quality of life and life satisfaction, in addition to this factor, spiritual pain has more influence on students' quality of life than their life satisfaction. The measurement score was examined by t-test to show the difference in characteristics of spiritual pain among students' attribution or experience. This study shows the existence of students' spiritual pain, suggests its components, and implies the need for further study with other groups and a wider sample. Those attempts will contribute to a spiritual care practice that can tailor for the clients' characteristics.
