The present paper aims at giving an explanation of the process in which what is called "light verb construction" is generated, focusing on expressions like give a shout. On the basis of the observation that give a〜shows difference, depending on individuals and on adjectives modifying the complement nominal, in the acceptability to syntactic operations such as passivization or wh-movement, we show that give in this construction does have its own semantic content, contrary to what is often assumed. In addition, we also propose that there are two different ways of generating give a〜constructions, which makes it possible to predict not only the difference in the acceptability to the syntactic operations but the selectional restriction in that construction.
