We investigated through interviews and literature reviews the kinds of activities in which children used herbaceous and woody plants. We determined that there were many kinds (857) of activities and found that 219 species of herbaceous and woody plants were used by children in these creative and play activities. Herbaceous plants made up 144 of the 219 species (66%) and included Taraxacum platycarpum, Trifolium repens, Plantago asiatica, Miscanthus sinensis, Digitaria ciliaris, Setaria viridis, Artemisia princeps, Rumex acetosa, Persicaria longiseta and Plygonum cupsidatum. Woody plants made up 34% of the 219 species and included Quercus acutissima, Quercus myrsinaefolia, Swida controversa, Castanea crenata, Nandina domestica, Euonymus sieboldianus, Rhus javanica var. roxburghii, Acer palmatum, Pinus densiflora and Pinus thunbergii. Based on their content and effect, the activities that used herbaceous and woody plants could be divided into six distinct types. The importance to environmental education of childrens activities that use herbaceous and woody plants was discussed.
