Middle Layer Cyclones in the Region of Japan

In this paper, the mechanism of development of weak high-level cyclones which were formed in autumn in the neighbourhood of Japan in recent years and seen only in the middle layer is studied synoptically. Generally speaking, these cyclones developed usually by the descending cold air coming from the north in the same way as ordinary high-level cyclones did, but this descending motion was stopped in the middle layer on account of the high stability in the lower layer. Accordingly, relations between these cyclones and surface pressure patterns are not noticeable. The stable stratification in the lower layer was established by the passage of the typhoon which moved northeastwards off the southeast coast of Japan before the cyclone development. In § 1, characteristics including the synoptic situation during the cyclone development, frequency, path and thermal structure of the middle layer cyclone are described. In § 2, the development of the cyclone is discussed using the equation of vorticity change of an individual air particle in the same way as in the case of the summer high-level cyclone. Finally in § 3, three cyclones which developed in recent years are investigated synoptically.
