The purpose of this study is to reform the coursework of 'instrumental music' at Minatogawa Junior College, in order to train pre-service teachers and care-givers to obtain practical instructional competence in music education. The author identified three components as the keys for this study in a reform: 1) analysis of lessons taught in 'instrumental music' up to the 2005 academic year, 2) strategic planning for new 'instrumental music', and 3) conducting new style of lessons for 'instrumental music'. There are 6 items for the curriculum contents: 1) basic skills training for piano, using BEYER text (with consideration for intermediate and advanced players), 2) obtaining skills and expanding repertoire in an accompaniment on the piano for children's songs, 3) obtaining skills using chord names to play and sing, 4) mastering solfege and simple musical theories, 5) mastering various methods of teaching music, and 6) mastering instructional skills using piano for early childhood education. Also, a new instructional system was innovated. The 90-minute class was divided into two 45-minute units, and two instructors alternately took two groups of students to cover multiple topics.
