The purpose of this study is to clarify the differences in teaching competences between novice and experienced teachers, focusing on their instructional behaviors during teaching music to elementary school children. Participating teachers were categorized into two groups : the novices under two years of experience and the experts claimed as good teachers with high level of practical creativity and competence. There were obvious differences found between two groups. The experienced teachers give clearer 'explanations' to students, do more 'evaluation', 'designation', 'direction', and 'model performance of singing', and use more 'non-verbal communication' compared to the novice teachers. This indicates that the experienced teachers produce 'highly skilled, copious teaching behaviors' in their practices. Above results reassured that it is urgent to pursue lesson studies focused on teaching behaviors, particularly for in-service training of new music teachers. It is also suggested that such studies should hold firm perspectives on 'what are the differences between experienced and novice teachers in terms of their levels of teaching behavior.'.
