With learner-autonomy becoming an increasingly popular feature in classrooms, this study examines the effects of student self-assessment in a Japanese university. The study had two main aims. First to investigate the criteria that students use to assess themselves on an oral presentation and second to discover more about student attitudes to the self-assessment process. The findings, though inconclusive, showed that students' cognitive processes play an important role in the learner-autonomy debate while their reaction to self-assessment was generally positive.
