Kakinomoto Hitomaro's task as a Court poet was one of crafting iconic image which prove the divinity of the Emperor. In his poetry we can find the word "Kamnagara", which is a rhetorical device meaning that Emperor is a Very God. This word is often used in the Imperial edicts written by Japanese court in eighth century. Ohotomono Yakamochi, who participated in the initial process of compilation of the Ten Thousand Leaves, used that word in his poetry. The purpose of this essay is to make clear the relation between the Imperial edicts and Yakamochi's poetry, centering on the word "Kamnagara".
