The first personal pronoun singular nominative is I in ModE, which was ic in OE. In Havelok the Dane written in about 1285, there appear eight forms of that pronoun-ic, hic, ich, ihc, i, hi, ig (the MS has ig, but the g should be expunged because it is considered mistakenly added) and y. The developmental process of ic-ich-i is easy to understand, and hic can be thought to be another form of ic, and ihc to be another form of ich, and hi, ig, y to be other forms of i. Why was it necessary for virtually seven such forms to be used though this romance was written in the developmental transition period from ic to i? My aim in this paper is to make the reason and the tendency as clear as possible by examining all the sentences including each form carefully.
