The shape and material of basal surface of bridge pontic are important ; so much research has been carried out with regard to the pontic design. However, research referring in detail to the influence of the shape of residual ridge on designing the basal surface of pontic could not be found. The purpose of this study is to analyze morphologically the residual ridge in maxillary anterior bridge cases. Thirty patients who had one tooth missing in maxillary anterior region were selected. Precise impressions of maxilla were taken and the gypsum casts for analysis were prepared. The cross sectional profile of residual ridge was measured with the three dimensional shape measurement system. Then on the assumption that modified ridge lap pontic is applied, the linear distance from the pontic cervical line to the crest of residual ridge and the protrusion degree of residual ridge were analyzed using personal computer. The results were as follows ; 1. Diversity of the shape of residual ridge was great. In 2 cases, the basal surface of pontic could not contact to the alveolar mucosa. Conversely, in order not to let the basal sarface of pontic become concave, there was even a case where the alveolar mucousa had to be pressed over 1mm. 2. In order not to let the basal surface of pontic be concave, when supposing the allowable value which presses alveolar mucosa is 0.3mm, 6 cases out of 28 cases were fulfilled. If supposing the value is 0.5mm, 15 cases out of 28 cases were fulfilled. From the above mentioned, it was suggested that when treating maxillary anterior bridge, it is necessary to give preprosthetic treatment such as alveolar preparation in considerable number of cases.
