Eight strains of soy beans, hitherto considered best for raising in various parts of Tokachi district, including the well-known "Tokachi-nagaha", "Nukanai-daizu" and "Manchurian Mixture", were put to field tests during the period from 1946 to 1951. Three new, late strains giving the highest yield and of superior quality have been selected out of them, and named "Narrow Leaf 1", "Aka Nukanai" and "Manchurian 1, " respetcively.The results of the tests carried out may be summarized as follows: 1. To those parts of Tokachi district, which have a submontane climate, shorter frostfree period and rather poor fertility, these three strains are considered especially adapted for cultivation, combining safty of harvest, high yield, and superior quality. 2. Though the three strains showed higher total productivity of seeds, stems and pods than the other five strains, the yield of stems and pods of "Manchurian 1" appeared to be lower by 1.1 percent than those of certain strains belonging to the "Tokachi-nagaha" or "Nukanai-daizu" groups. Among the three strains "Narrow Leaf 1" gave in most cases the highest yield and "Manchurian 1" the lowest. 3. The productivity, , chemically analyzed, of the three selected strains are shown in the following tables, A and B. Table 4. As to the practical values of the three selected strains, it may be briefly said that "Narrow Leaf 1" is unsurpassed in its yield of seeds as well as of stems and pods, while it gives way to "Aka Nukanai", which is highly resistant to frost, in the safety of harvest. "Manchurian 1" is considered recommendable when one intends both to harvest seeds and to make fodder, having superiority in chemical constituion of the stems and pods. It appears, moreover, that there is a possibility of increasing the total yield of this. last-named strain, which is taller, stronger and has generally more branches holding many pods than the former two strains, by improving its culture method.
