The purpose of this study is to deliberate the novel significance of contemporary art exhibition as a social apparatus by paying special attention to the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, " the theme of which is "Human Beings Are a Part of Nature." Chapter I examines the history of art exhibition and points out its fundamental character. Chapter II observes the states of several international art exhibitions as an extremely modern trend, and especially refers to the relationships between international art exhibition and contemporary society by noting the "Venice Biennale." Chapter III reveals the characteristics and the importance of contemporary art exhibition based on the author's field investigation in the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2006." The "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, " established for the purpose of realizing the regional revitalization in the Echigo-Tsumari district of the Niigata prefecture in 2000, is a very unique international art exhibition rooted in the local community. The sites for art works in this project are many hills, fields and villages unfolded over 760 square kilometers. In its third exhibition in 2006, approximately 200 artists from 40 countries created 330 art works among an abundance of nature and numerous mountain villages, and new fruits of efforts which had been continuously made since its establishment were perceived. In conclusion, this paper demonstrates the following four points. Firstly, the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial" emphasizes the site's presence more strongly than any other conventional art exhibitions. The site of this triennial is not the so-called "white cube" in museum, but the "real world of daily life." Therefore, the site is playing the leading part, in the sense both of obtaining cooperation from a number of local inhabitants, and of attracting the attention of visitors to the aspects of this region, for example, its history, its landscape, its present situation and so on. Secondly, this triennial has very unique characteristics as an international art exhibition. People in this triennial, the visitors as well as the local inhabitants, pay little attention to a nationality of exhibitor. Also, it seems that both the art works and the artists are set free from national fetters there. Thirdly, it is to be indicated that "art" in this triennial is working as a good mediator rather than as the principal role. Finally, this triennial has a powerfully dynamic character in comparison with a static state of conventional art exhibition. In this sense, the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial" does not accomplish on its final day of the exhibition. Instead, as a unique art project carried out by the collaboration between various actors, it is in the midst of full activity toward the future.
