Japanese consumption patterns have diversified and grown more extravagant along with economic growth. We were understanding about consumption tending towards more luxury items and diversification, these patterns have changed again since the collapse of the bubble economy. The total population will soon begin to decline and Japan's population is aging rapidly which the birth rate keeps falling. At the same time, total debts hold by the central and local governments amount to a whopping 774 trillion yen as of the end of this fiscal year, 1.5 times Japan's gross domestic product. We can not pass on these huge debts to futures generations. Something is wrong Central and Local Government. The government has no choice but to consider tax increases to prevent the worst from happening. The journey to fiscal reconstruction is unimaginably long and arduous. We will undoubtedly face a rocky road on the way to fiscal reconstruction. The government is in dire straits for money, but government must take child-care supports, pension pans, medical services and other social welfare measures as tasks of prime importance. People are beginning to choose spiritual richness over material prosperity. While social structures are becoming polarized and more and more people are living in poverty, some families seek a slower life style without worrying what other people think. This phenomenon can be said to be particular to Japan's mature society, where values have become diversified. Economics still look dodgy, but our life must not be played cat and mouse by the economy.
