This paper concerns the successful setting up of a multilingual electronic "Database of Documents and Bibliographies for Social Sciences in Northeast Asia (NEARDB)". The database can be accessed via the Internet (http://gdb.u-shimane.ac.jp/neardb/index.jsp). The aim of the NEARDB is to make the sharing of Northeast Asia data across countries much easier. It also allows users to append information on the database. The NEARDB gives access to the data contained in the following files: "A chronological table compiled from the Asahi Annual Report and other sources", "Municipal Government Bulletin (Beijing Special Municipal)" "Shanghai Municipal Police Files", "China-related material archive, Hoover Institute, Stanford University" and "Subject Index of Humanities and Social Science Periodicals published by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences". The NEARDB system is composed of a WWW server (Apache2), a servlet container (Tomcat4), query translators (servlet), a database system (Oracle9i), and viewer converters (JSP). The system has three types of search interface mode: simple search, advance search and multiple database search. Additionally the database has a virtual keyboard which allows Mongolian to be input. To manage data on the NEARDB, researchers who provide data use Microsoft Excel 2003 with a VBA macro program. To browse data on the NEARDB, users require a WWW browser which is JavaScript enabled and can display Unicode characters. The NEARDB has been accessed over 3100 times since April 2004. Therefore it can be considered an extremely useful way to share data among researchers. In the future it is planned to expand the NEARDB by adding other databases over time. An example of such expansion which has already taken place is that from July 2004 the public has been able to access the "Catalogue Database of Tianjin history before 1945 (Japanese Documents Edition)". It is also intended to make the search system more user friendly by analyzing the NEARDB access log.
